Unfortunately, 2018 is going to go down as the year of loot boxes and microtransactions and the same is true for Red Dead Redemption 2. Video game developers are moving away from crafting in-depth single player experiences and moving toward "live service" game model. If you're not familiar with this term, live services basically means that the game focuses mainly on its multiplayer mode.

This mode will usually come with the game for no additional cost, but there are several hidden costs people don't consider. For one, players will most likely need a Playstation Plus or Xbox Live paid subscription to access the multiplayer servers. In addition, the majority of new multiplayer games focus heavily on microtransactions and premium currency, which players can use to buy in-game items.

Every game has a different way of implementing these micro-transactions. Some games, like Star Wars Battlefront, Overwatch, and Call of Duty Black Ops 4, offer loot boxes which the player can purchase. They offer random items of a varying rarity when opened.

The problem here is that since there is no way to purchase the items you want separately if you want a rare item, you basically have to gamble with your money until you get the item you are looking for. Many people have, therefore, equated loot boxes to in-game gambling.
